Toll roads and traffic in Northern Virginia can make for a hectic and expensive commute. You can use the Express Lanes on I-66 and I-495 for free to commute to work faster when you share your ride via carpooling or vanpooling. Commuter Connections ‘Pool Rewards program incentivizes commuters to make the switch from driving alone to sharing the ride. Commuters who form or join a new carpool or vanpool are eligible to participate and receive a financial incentive for choosing a sustainable commuting option. Carpools:

  • At least two individuals
  • Commute a minimum or two times per week on average
  • Participants are eligible to receive $5 per day they commute to and from work over a 90-day period
Vanpools:
  • At least seven individuals
  • Commute a minimum of two times per week
  • Participants are eligible to receive a $200 monthly subsidy
If your employer offers a transit benefit, vanpool may be an even better option in terms of affordability and reduced wear and tear on your personal vehicle. Once you have a minimum of four riders for your van, you can rent a vehicle from a company like Commute with Enterprise, meet up with others at a Park and Ride lot before hopping on the Express Lanes for your commute. Vanpool Alliance offers hundreds of dollars to keep your cost of vanpooling low and will help you find other riders when you need them. Your nearest Park and Ride lots to Reston Station are:
  • Wiehle-Reston Park and Ride
  • Reston North Park and Ride
  • Herndon Metro Station Park and Ride
Commuters who walk, bike, take transit, carpool or vanpool are eligible to register for Commuter Connections Guaranteed Ride Home Program which offers commuters who utilize sustainable travel modes at least twice a week six free rides home a year.
