This new payment system is unique to WMATA. Local and regional transit systems typically only accept SmarTrip cards or exact change in cash.

Can I pay with my digital wallet?

Yes. Tap-to-pay is available throughout WMATA’s system including Metrorail and Metrobus.

Ways to Pay:

  • Physical credit and debit card
  • Physical and digital SmarTrip card
  • Exact change in cash (for bus) or uploaded to a SmarTrip card at a fare vending machine (for rail)

Note: Those who participate in the SmartBenefits Program should pay their fare with the SmarTrip card registered to their account when commuting.
